What is a Design?

A design refers to the features of shape, configuration, pattern, ornament, or composition of lines or colours applied to any article by an industrial process or means. It pertains only to the aesthetic value of the article, not its functionality.

Registration grants you an exclusive monopoly right for 10 years (renewable for 5 more years) to prevent others from manufacturing or selling products that feature your unique design.

Frequently Asked Questions

The initial protection period is 10 years. This can be extended by a further 5 years upon filing a renewal application (Form-3) and paying the renewal fee.
Any feature of shape, configuration, pattern, or ornament applied to an article. It must be new and original. It cannot be a purely functional feature (that would require a patent).
If the Controller refuses the design, the applicant can file an appeal with the High Court within 3 months. Our full-service package covers the process of replying to the initial Examination Report.
